studio

studio

Studio time and exhibition time. Creating new works for this season has not been without its challenges but finally getting some works fired and seeing the progression of thoughts from my typical landscape themes to something even more abstract and spring inspired. The works will be photographed on completion but in the mean time I’ve been getting ready for what we call rakufest!

I will be breaking out the mini raku kiln and wood firing again. The last results were inspiring and all sold out at my SALA shows! A first for me and now the challenge to make more heavily lustre wares again.

Images below are of tile tests and raku bottles and a warm up set of clay balls ready for throwing one afternoon last week.

These were followed by some large bowl making afternoons and they are now loaded in the electric kiln ready for firing tomorrow. As spring has blown in the rest times between making and firing are distinctly shortened and thought patterns for evolving the work must hasten with this season as soon full summer will be here and there is no thinking time!

Studio time continues…

tagine nouveau

tagine nouveau

This is the very nouveau in my Tagine process. Still 3 litres in content size with an overlaying lid, which gives the feeling of a top hat. I like this style and balance, rustic appearance yet smooth to the touch. Visually they are possibly more oriental in their form than African. The shino glaze performed well in the firing again and the flame movement through the kiln is evident in the glaze surface with some deep reds and classic orange appearance inside and out of the wares.

I am mid clay production again for the next batch and the last pugged and processed clay has been stored resting ready for another two day throwing session. After sanding these will be ready for delivery as the bases need to be smooth for table top wares, nothing worse than scratching your favourite wood table top as the pot gets passed down the table during dinner. Although with the scale of these pots I would suggest serving from them for your dinner guests.

rim shot

rim shot

The last couple of firings have been remarkable in their details, stunning colours and shiny glaze responses along with tiny carbon spots just enough to make rime shots appealing. I read a comment recently on Euan Craigs website that talked about the warmth of sunsets being visable and recognizable in the colour of shino glazes. He’s not wrong there are many things to be seen in traditional glazes no matter how you fire them the surfaces are stunning. My glaze recipe is originally an american shino given to me by a canadian friend and it now has australian roots in its firing. I hope you enjoy this journey I’m on discovering a glaze and its possibilities for a lifetime.rim shot 1

Printmaking is also making a strong return to my work this year. With animalia themes combined with wallpaper images and the layering of glazes, they are very rich and bold surfaces. deco tiles
